If you know our co-founder Ashley, you know she and her husband Chad have a passion for older-dog adoption. Long before Pennies for P.A.W.S. was even a dream, Ashley and Chad have been adopting older dogs and giving them a safe, loving, healthy home to live out their remaining days. Whether they are expected to live weeks or years, senior dogs deserve love and family to call their own.
If you have room in your home for a dog, there are so many reasons you should consider an older dog rather than a puppy!
Loving and Intuitive
One of the best reasons to adopt an older dog is they are typically much calmer and more even-tempered than a puppy. Older dogs have a been-there-done-that attitude that makes them wonderful companions, especially for older people. Dogs adopted in their older years are appreciative and naturally more intuitive to their human families. They have years of experience reading people, and their ability to fit in and follow daily routines will amaze you.
Calm and Tidy Companions
Another reason to adopt an older dog is that they typically make fewer messes in your home. They generally arrive house trained and well past the chewing phase that younger dogs inevitably go through. Give them their own bed or kennel, and they will gravitate to it rather than being underfoot the way younger dogs often are. Older dogs will appreciate every moment with you whether they’re snuggled up with you or quietly watching you from their bed. They will show you the kind of love that only a senior dog with life experience can show!
Couch Potato Gurus
While older dogs certainly love a good walk in the park, their exercise needs are much less demanding than a younger dog’s needs will be. These sage companions are couch potato gurus who will snuggle for as long as you want. Older dogs make the perfect companion for an afternoon of Netflix or reading a book. You won’t find a better rainy-day companion than a dog in his or her senior years.
If you have room for a dog in your home, please consider adopting a senior dog from a local rescue organization. Let us know if you need recommendations of where to find your perfect senior companion!
Pennies for P.A.W.S. is a 501(c)3 registered nonprofit organization. Please consider donating to our mission.
