WHY SPAY/NEUTER FERAL CATS?

If you follow our social media, you’re probably aware that Pennies for P.A.W.S. spends a portion of our donations each year on spaying and neutering feral cats. This is an important part of our plan to positively impact animals in our community. If you’ve ever wondered why we focus our efforts in this area, here are some important facts you should know.

First, let’s address the elephant in the room: why go through all the trouble catching feral cats, taking them in for care, and spending the money on cats that are unwanted? Although we don’t want to think about it, there are folks out there who argue that these unwanted cats would be better off euthanized. The problem with euthanizing feral cats is that it creates a “vacuum” situation. We all know that nature abhors a vacuum. Feral cats from other areas will quickly move into the territories of euthanized feral cats to consume the resources those cats have left behind. Euthanizing feral cats simply creates empty territory for other cats to fill.

Spaying and neutering also makes feral cats much better neighbors! Mating behaviors like yowling, roaming, and fighting virtually eliminates these behaviors, creating healthier and quieter feral cat populations.

Providing spay/neuter services to feral cats also gives vets the opportunity to vaccinate these cats, which creates safer environments for both humans and our domesticated animals. Cats that have been vaccinated against rabies helps fight the spread of disease well beyond the cat populations themselves.

As you can see, spaying and neutering feral cat populations creates safer, healthier lives for the cats and those who live in the community. We at Pennies for P.A.W.S. will continue to focus our efforts on this very important mission!

Donate toward our mission to spay and neuter feral cats. Pennies for P.A.W.S. is a 502(c)3 registered nonprofit organization. We are an all-volunteer organization that has been making a difference in the lives of animals in need since 2020.

Thank you!
